On the fisheries management side Spring means it is now time to finalize your management plan for the year and by mid month turn on feeders, fertilize, apply algaecides and herbicides. It may also be time to stock or supplementally stock forage fish into the lake. If you are unsure what steps you need to take it may be time for an onsite consult or even an electrofishing survey. Electrofishing is a tool used in fisheries management to determine the current diversity of the fish populations. This survey technique utilizes the pond waters ability to conduct low amperage electricity through the water column. As a specific voltage, amperage and frequency of electricity is applied to water it can temporarily stun fish in the path of the electricity. Captured fish are weighed, measured, and compared to a standard weight chart to determine individual condition. In some situations fish are culled from the lake at that time. I prefer to electrofish when water temperatures are between 65-80 degrees because it gives me the greatest access to all sizes and types of fish in shallower water. The results of an electrofishing survey are used to determine the success of past management practices and to help write management plans for the future. It is important to have a management plan in place as a guide to achieving your goals. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need help with any aspect of creating your management plan and don't forget to get out on the water and fish.
